Meeting of the XVI Ordinary Council

Meeting of the XVI Ordinary Council

Vatican, 17 December 2024

On Tuesday afternoon, 17 December, the first meeting of the XVI Ordinary Council of the General Secretariat of the Synod took place.

After a moment of prayer led by Fr. Matteo Ferrari, OSB Cam, Msgr. Piero Coda, Secretary General of the International Theological Commission, presented a report on the ecclesiological perspectives of the Final Document adopted by the members of the XVI Ordinary General Assembly of the Synod of Bishops (2-27 October 2024) and by the Holy Father at the end of the Assembly. A rich debate followed.

Afterwards, the Council members discussed a series of initiatives and topics to be developed to accompany the local Churches in the appropriation of the Final Document and the implementation of its recommendations.

The General Secretariat was asked to develop a project focusing on formation in synodality and the accompaniment of the Churches to be submitted to the Council at its next meeting in early February 2025.

Concluding the meeting, Cardinal Mario Grech, General Secretary, reminded the Council members of their role as ‘Ambassadors of synodality to your local Churches so that the People of God may increasingly fall in love with the synodal Church’.
